CORBALLY RESIDENTS ANGERED OVER FLOODING INCIDENT

There is growing anger among residents in Corbally, who say the flooding which has caused devastation overnight was man-made.

Earlier the ESB informed the public that they had to increase the flow of water from the Ardnacrusha Dam near the village of Parteen, a short distance from Limerick city. The Shannon flows through Limerick city, parts of which have been directly affected by the rising flod waters.

Shannon Catchment Could See Worst Flooding In Years This Week

The National Emergency Coordination Centre is warning of severe flooding in parts of the midlands and southwest later.

Flood warnings remain in place as continuing rainfall also swells streams, rivers and reservoirs.

And spring tides this coming Friday and Saturday (11-12 December) are set to combine with "the fluvial flood wave coming down the Shannon" that is rated "in the severe category", warned the OPW's Jim Casey, who noted that the Erne catchment is also rising.

Meanwhile, the ESB has increased the flow of water from Parteen Weir at Ardnacrusha to help manage the Shannon's flood waters – but this too may lead to flooding of streets in Limerick city and suburbs.
Flooding update from Limerick City and County Council 11.45AM, Wednesday, 9 December 2015  Limerick City and County Council says it has received confirmation from the ESB of its decision not to change the discharge level at the Parteen Weir from its current level of 375 cubic meters per second (cumecs). The Council indicated however, that water levels along the lower River Shannon at Montpelier, Castleconnell and the Mountshannon Road (Lisnagry) are continuing to rise and that they could elevate further during the next few days.
