Deputy Mayor Cllr Tom Short addressing the invited guests at the Different Corners Exhibition 2nd October

It was a Wonderful, Marvellous, Eventful Night of Different Colours. On Friday evening 2nd October a horde of art lovers descended on the Augustinian Church Basement Art Studio, O'Connell Street, Limerick. The doors were thrown open just before 7.00pm. Mayor Kevin Kiely sent his apologies being unable to attend. Cllr Tom Short was sent in his place. What an inspired choice. Shortly after 7.30pm our Chairman Joe O'Brien introduced the Deputy Mayor to the waiting crowd. Being an art teacher he quickly gauged the mood of the attendees, who included the glitterati of the city. He spoke of the contribution by the little artist in this oasis of culture in the middle of the city. He particularly commended the work of Jean Ryan Hakizimana who has been passing on his skill to the exhibitors. The result was this spectacular display of paintings, covering many styles and subjects. Bonnie King, a former pupil of Cllr Short presented him with one of her paintings on behalf of Basement Artists.

The wine was flowing ... in fact at one stage it looked as if we might have to call on the Lord to repeat the Miracle at Cana of Galilee. Cheese and Chocolate were also provided to whet the palate.

The artists were amazed with the reception from the overflowing crowd. In these times of recession it should be remembered that "Art is the New Gold". The whole event was a Victory for Enthusiasm.

We wish to thank all the helpers who ensured that this exhibition was a success: Jean Ryan Hakizimana for his guidance, Joe O'Brien and his hard working committee, Receptionist, Refreshments Provider, The Limerick Independent for promoting the exhibition and my friend John Kelly who was on hand to take some photographs. These I hope to place on the my blog later.
